I know, I know, I know. I am probably gonna get a big fat boooo hissssss from most of you reading this but I can’t explain it and I like to always keep it real with you so here it goes…I am NOT a fan of Elf on the shelf. First of all, let me say I, in no way, mean this to offend those of you who do this in your home. I know how much joy it brings your children and probably even you and I love that! And if you know me, you know I am ALLLLLL about joy for everyone…especially this time of year. I mean, come on, I have a tattoo that says La Joie de Vivre which means the joy of living in French. I purposely got this tattoo to remind me to only surround myself with joyful things, people, places whatever! HOWEVER, for me, in our home…the Elf on the shelf does not bring me joy. lol But let me clarify, it’s not the elf itself, or even the story behind the elf, I think all of that is wonderful and lovely. It’s more the crazy over the top antics the Elf gets itself into and even more than that, it’s the massive display of it on social media that sends me over the edge. Like in a hot pokers in my eyeballs kind of way.
But maybe it’s only me and before you run to the post office to send me a big fat lump of coal, I will tell you that we do do something similar in our house called My Christmas Angel which is like an angel version of the Elf on the Shelf but it doesn’t do crazy antics. It flies to a different place each night and that’s it. The Christmas Angel “Gracie” as we named her, comes Thanksgiving night and leaves Christmas Eve to go back to Heaven. We read the sweet book throughout the Christmas season and I enjoy watching her fly around while she is here and I enjoy watching my girls try and find her each morning. But she doesn’t do squat except keep an eye on what the girls are doing.
I was even talking to my girlfriend Randee about this the other day. She is the mom of my daughter Lily’s BFF. The Elf goes to her house and does crazy stuff and her whole family loves it! I came clean about my disdain for the Elf antics but I love how happy it makes my friend and her family so that in turn makes me happy. So I guess that is what I am trying to say is Elf away people and I will support you but there will be no Elfing in my own house. lol
How do YOU feel about the Elf On The Shelf?
